Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant: Could You Get Help to Replace Your Old Boiler?
If your current boiler is becoming too expensive to run, unreliable or due for replacement you may be wondering whether there is a boiler replacement grant available to help with the cost.
One of the main schemes homeowners are searching for is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme often referred to as the BUS grant. Despite the name, this is not a like-for-like boiler grant. Instead, it helps eligible property owners replace fossil fuel heating systems, such as gas, oil LPG or electric heating, with low carbon heating system such as an air or ground source heat pump.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government backed grant designed to make low carbon heating more affordable for homes and small business across England and Wales.
Current grants include:
- Up to £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump installation
- Up to £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump
Updated for 2026: From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, eligible off-gas-grid homes and small businesses currently using LPG or heating oil may be able to access up to £9,000 towards an air source or ground source heat pump.
The grant is normally applied for as an upfront discount through your installer, so you do not usually need to claim the money back yourself.

Is there a boiler grant for pensioners?
Many people search for a boiler grant for pensioners, but the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not just for pensioners and is not based purely on age. Eligibility depends on your property, your current heating system and the type of low carbon system being installed.
That means pensioners, homeowners, landlords and some business may be able to explore the scheme, provided the property and installation meet the requirements.
Can I get a grant to replace my boiler?
You may be eligible if you own a property in England or Wales and want to replace an existing fossil fuel heating system with an approved low-carbon heating system.
However, not every property will be suitable straight away. Heat pumps work best when a home is properly assessed, well designed and correctly installed. Things like insulation, radiator sizes, hot water demand and available outdoor space can all determine what system is right for you.
