If you have a water leak, grab as many bowls and towels as you need to catch leaking water and to mop up any water already on your floors and carpets.
Next, turning off your mains water supply will help reduce the damage by stopping more water from coming into your home. Your stop cock controls the water coming into your home and is usually under the sink in your kitchen. See the photos for examples of what this looks like. You need to turn the stop cock anticlockwise as far as it will go to turn off the water.
This should stop more water from coming into your system but there will still be some in the pipes. You can test if you’ve turned it off fully by turning the kitchen sink cold tap on. It should run for a few seconds but quickly turn into just a dribble of water if you’ve turned the water supply off properly.
